GRID gets 8 Ball car pack this autumn

September 19th, 2008 by Neil @ 11:09amNo comments yet

Codemasters has just revealed the details of the first piece of downloadable content for Race Driver: GRID. The game will be seeing eight new cars and four new achievements for an undisclosed price some time this autumn.

The cars which will be included are: McLaren F1 GTR, TVR Cerbera Speed 12, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X, Honda S2000, Nissan GT-R (S-G2008), Volkswagen Nardo and the Pontiac Firebird Trans AM. Most notably, the Volvo C30 will slot into the touring car class which currently only has two vehicles to choose from.

The four new achievements are worth a total of 100 points and are all related to your antics using the aforementioned cars. Later in the year Codemasters will also be launching a second DLC pack including Australian V8 Supercars and the Bathurst track.

Good news racing fans – Sony are just about to flick the switch on a major new Ferrari Challenge update. The patch fixes a huge number of bugs but most importantly it adds 46 PlayStation Network trophies to the game, giving everyone another reason to try to finish the game.

PS3Trophies.org has a complete list of all of the trophies which of course are classified Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. The update will be going live later today.

EDITORIAL: Codemasters’ Big Opportunity

September 14th, 2008 by Neil @ 7:42pmNo comments yet

I’ve been a Formula 1 fan for as long as I can remember. It’s quite disappointing that we’ve not seen an F1 game based on a more recent season than 2006. Mods aside, characters like Heikki Kovalainen and Sebastian Vettel are yet to make the jump into a digital environment. As you’ll no doubt be aware though, all of that is about to change next season when we see a brand new F1 game being released by Codemasters. Of course, it’s all going to be very pretty (it is really the first next generation F1 title) but visuals aside, the area which is exciting me most is the possibilities for multiplayer. Kotaku managed to get some hands on time with SimBin’s Race Pro for Xbox 360 and promptly sent one of their best journalists over to try it out. Of course, the lady they sent promisingly started her report with “I’m clueless about racing games”.

She made up for that early slip by giving a detailed explanation of the game’s career mode and says that the title as a whole is “more like a racing sim than a racing game”. I’m not sure if she’s just spent too much time on Mario Kart or whether she really does understand that there is a whole world of subgenres living beneath the “driving” title. Oh well, here’s some new screenshots to make the wait for this title a little easier:

Sony announced today that WipEout HD will sell for just £11.99 when it goes on sale. Quite when that will be remains a mystery but when it does it’s going to have trophy support as well as running at 1080px60fps. Seems like a bargain to me.

Cars are the most colourful things

At least in these Need for Speed: Undercover screenshots anyway. Not content with the nice changes they made to the game in ProStreet, EA have given the game a lick of brown and yellow to ensure that you cannot possibly miss that shiny BMW M6. That is unless you deliberately paint your 911 brown.

Motorstorm Pacific Rift boxart

September 10th, 2008 by Neil @ 11:05amNo comments yet

There’s erupting volcanoes and hairy quad-bikers, meaning it can only be one thing – the Motorstorm Pacific Rift Packshot. The game is predictably plastered with the new horizontal banner that Sony has been placing on all their new exclusives and that banner will help people to know they can only get the game on PlayStation. I don’t recall hearing those erupting volcanoes actually made it into the final release though…

Aside from launching some mundane new iPod models today, Apple also gave gamers a treat with a first look at Need for Speed Undercover running on iPhone and iPod touch. The game is going to deal with the same story-driven gameplay as the console and PC versions but it’s all shrunk down into a game which looks remarkably impressive for something running on a mobile phone. The real car models made the cut.

Jobs followed up the performance with words which he may live to regret. He declared iPod touch to be “the best portable device for games”. Check out the images of NFS below:

Microsoft slashes Forza 2 DLC prices

September 5th, 2008 by Neil @ 6:30pmNo comments yet

In what can only be deciphered as a move to bolster support for an ageing racer, Microsoft today announced that it has dropped the price of four of Forza Motorsport 2′s downloadable content packs. Until the end of October you can get your hands on the September, December and March car packs along with the Twin Ring Motegi track pack for 240 MSP. That’s a saving of 40% on their original 400MSP prices.
